White Wine by Conundrum from California. The puzzle of Conundrum lies partly in guessing the range of grape varieties used, because its exact composition is never revealed! To create the layered flavors that go into the Conundrum blend, Sauvignon Blanc grapes were brought in from the Napa Valley, Muscat Canelli from Tulare County on the Central Coast, and Chardonnay and Viognier from Conundrum's vineyards in Monterey County. About one quarter of the wine lots were fermented in stainless steel in order to preserve their individual fruit characteristics. The remaining lots were fermented in a combination of new and seasoned oak barrels for up to ten months. Conundrum 2006 exhibits soft tropical notes of guava and cherimoya, also peach and honeysuckle. The rich perfume is supported by concentrated and focused layers of peach and apricot nectar, pear and green melon with spicy vanilla notes. The creamy texture and balanced acidity carries through the palate for a long finish.

White Wine by Covey Run from Columbia Valley, Washington. BACKGROUND The best Chardonnay vineyards in Washington state are those planted in the cooler sites. The grapes ripen mid-to-late season in these situations and this is necessary to preserve the most delicate fruit flavors. Higher elevation vineyards in the cooler Yakima Valley ripen beautiful Chardonnay in early October. In the warmer Columbia Valley, north-facing sites are optimal because they ripen later than south-facing slopes. An excellent location for Chardonnay is also the Columbia River Gorge appellation on the east side of the Cascades near White Salmon, Washington, which benefits from the mixing of cooler marine air that blows through the Gorge in the summer and fall. WINEMAKING We pick Chardonnay when the tropical fruit flavors are well developed, but before the berries lose their green acidity. For the Winemaker's Collection bottling, we prefer handpicked fruit that is then whole-cluster pressed to make a delicate, limpid juice. We transfer the juice to a blend of 65% French and 35% American oak barrels and barrel ferment the wines. After 6 to 7 months in barrel, we blend and fine the wines and then bottle during the summer. WINE DESCRIPTION Our Winemaker's Collection Chardonnay is rich and round, yet balanced with enough acidity to bring out the fruit. We consider oak to be a complement to the flavors of the grape, and do not let it dominate the fruit. Mouth-filling flavors of crisp apple, pear and lush melon meld with those of vanilla, hazelnut and toast, leading to a long lingering finish.

White Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. Keen to produce d'Arenberg's first white in the late 1950's, d'Arry Osborn needed no convincing that it should be made from Riesling. Inspired by his friend and neighbor, Cud Kay of Amery Vineyards, d'Arry finally released d'Arenberg's first vintage of Riesling in the late 1960's. Another neighbor, Jack Neil, inadvertently helped d'Arry to decide in which years it was best to make d'Arenberg's Riesling. The Neil's dam runs up against d'Arenberg's Riesling block and a dry summer always meant a Dry Dam, which results in concentrated Riesling grapes brimming with flavor and well balanced acidity. It was not long before d'Arry discovered that the best Rieslings were Dry Dam Rieslings. The Dry Dam's young pale to medium straw color is often permeated with remarkable green tinges. It attacks the senses with ripe, spicy cinnamon, candied fruit and lychee qualities overlaid with lime, citrus blossom and almost perfumed rose-petal aromas. The young Dry Dam is medium bodied with lime and lemon flavors initially, followed by tropical pineapple and pear flavors. The rich, soft, juicy mouthfeel finishes with fresh crisp acidity. Over time the color will take on a deeper golden appearance and the fruit intensity will develop into a richer honeysuckle, orange peel, glace fruit and tea aromas.

White Wine by d'Arenberg from South Australia, Australia. Since 1912 the Osborn family has tended the 19th century vineyards at their d'Arenberg winery, located in South Australia, where the family often procures top quality fruit from the cool climate Adelaide Hills region, which has become one of Australia's finest Chardonnay districts. During the summer months, native Bearded Dragon Lizards sun themselves on the vineyard posts and watch out for potential prey. Occasionally during harvest, these lizards are dislodged and find their way into a load of grapes headed for the winery. Lucky for these lizards, d'Arenberg uses a very gentle Demoisy crusher, which allows these lizards to pass through the ordeal slightly shaken, yet unharmed. The gentleness of the crusher also plays an important role in retaining the delicate fruit flavors. After excellent winter rains and then a warm wet spring, the vineyards were set for a good start to vintage. Flowering was consistent, and in general crop loads were higher than normal. McLaren Vale experienced the coldest January for 12 years followed by a warm February which provided perfect ripening conditions and the result was fruit of outstanding character, concentration and excellent natural acidity. The success of this wine is put down to the evenness of the ripening period leading up to picking in the early autumn and extremely protective handling in the winery to preserve the wonderful fruit characters. The nose is immediately inviting with volumes of pear, pineapple, tropical fruits, guava, hints of peach, green melon, citrus and very fine sweet toasted oaks. Medium to full in style with the level of ripeness in perfect balance with the elevated acidity and the characteristic cool climate flowery Granny Smith apples that linger to the end with fine oak spices, and citric passionfruit character. Probably the best Lucky Lizard yet.
