McLaren Vale

Red Wine by Angoves from McLaren Vale, Australia. The fruit for this wine is grown in the foothills of the Adelaide range as you leave the beach side town of McLaren Vale. The sandy loam soils rise and gently face the west, allowing the vines to soak up the warm afternoon rays of the sun. The cooling evening breezes, which flow from the sea up the valley floor, give the vines relief during the summer nights and allow steady maturation of the berries while preserving elegance and natural acidity. This medium to full-bodied Shiraz displays upfront cherry and licorice aromas and secondary spicy oak so characteristic of McLaren Vale Shiraz. The full palate shows more luscious ripe berry fruit, with complexity provided by soft mouth filling tannins. The freshness shows potential for aging, but the softness allows enjoyment now.

Red Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. The palate is juicy with weighty, red-fruited Shiraz dominated by plums, rhubarb, cherries, strawberries, mulberry, smoked bacon, white pepper and flower characters then a level of black currants and fragrant spice from the Cabernet and Petit Verdot appear. On the second sip a lovely mulberry tar-like character of Merlot starts to fill the palate with vivid, deep-red cherry flavors mixed with a hint of sage leaf, cloves and turmeric from the Petit Verdot which fans out across the finish with a grippy but polished finish. About Love Grass A wild grass, the Lovegrass often grows in the vineyards. During vintage, the sticky, Velcro-like, long-stemmed flowers of the Lovegrass affectionately attach themselves to the vineyard workers' socks. They even manage to get caught in Coco , the winery dog's coat and have yet to be brushed out. This shiraz will linger with you much the same way as the sticky flowers do and, as such, the family thought it fitting to name this wine.

Red Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. Dead Arm is a vine disease caused by the fungus Eutypa Lata that randomly affects vineyards all over the world. Often vines affected are severely pruned or replanted. d'Arenberg believes that this is a natural part of vineyard life. One half, or arm of the vine slowly becomes reduced to dead wood. That side may be lifeless and brittle, but the grapes on the other side display amazing intensity. Vintage 2005 could be summarized as a vintage that ripened without interruptions. The resulting wines are tight with amazing red fruit fragrance and lovely acidity. Crops yields were above average although slightly under the 2004 vintage. Only the best barrels of Shiraz are selected to be bottled as The Dead Arm. The 2005 Dead Arm displays intense cedar, fig, blackberry, blueberry, and pepper aromas. Perfectly structured with a long and rich framework, it will yield this wine great aging power. After time in the bottle, the Dead Arm gains a biscuity, cinnamon, caramel and eucalyptus based bouquet on top of rich blackberry pie smells. Tobacco, mushroom, malt, spice and earth flavors play a complementary part on the long, fleshy finish.

Red Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. Vivid dark purple in color. The viognier adds fragrance and the perfume of flowers, nectarines, ginger and herbs, serving to enhance the very ripe spectrum of the shiraz - blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry. These same characters are also evident on the palate and prevail with a smooth glycerol impact, following through to the mid palate with fruity tannin. The structure has an accent on fine structure and gritty long fruit tannin. After time in bottle the d'Arenberg's Laughing Magpie's flavors should intensify. The restrained tannin and acidity will produce a seamless velvety rolling length with age.

Red Wine by d'Arenberg from McLaren Vale, Australia. The vineyards and bushland that surround the d'Arenberg winery are home to a unique native Australian bird, the Kookaburra, famous for its distinctive laughing call. Winemaker Chester Osborn's daughters named their two wild pet Kookaburras the Laughing Magpies. The Magpie plumage is black with a stripe of white feathers and bears no resemblance to its famous cousin, but the name has stuck as it is the perfect choice for McLaren Vale's first ever Shiraz (black)/ Viognier (white) blend. The wine has a dark, saturated appearance with a violet-crimson hue. Maraschino cherries, spiced fruit peel, ginger and apricot stones are apparent on the nose, with black tea, olive and tarry notes appearing as the wine opens up. The palate is soft and generous, showing juicy flavors of blueberries, ribena, cherries and dark chocolate. Tea-like tannins are abundant and combine with defined acidity to provide structure and length. The long, refined finish reveals this wine's aging potential.

Red Wine by Marquis Philips from McLaren Vale, Australia. The 2005 Marquis Philips Sarah’s Blend is predominantly Shiraz with significant portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc. 100% barrel fermented in new and 1 year old oak (10% French, 90% American oak.) and barrel matured for 12 months. The 2005 wines show generous and concentrated fruit and this vintage of Sarah’s Blend is a great example with its flavors of blackcurrant fruit married with opulent toasty oak.  It has silky, smooth tannins and shows some lifted and spicy fresh fruit aromas along with its bold fruit expression. One of my favorite Marquis Philips cuvees is the 2005 Sarah’s Blend, a concoction of 60% Shiraz, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc fermented in wood and aged in both new and one-year-old French and American oak. Its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by aromas of flowers, spice box, blueberries, black currants, and smoky oak. Opulent, voluptuous, and full-bodied, with low acidity and sweet tannin, this is a blockbuster red that sells for a song. If you like fruit, flavor, and character, this is a big-time winner to drink over the next 3-4 years. - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
