Red Wine by Almira from Spain. 93% Garnacha, 7% Syrah From slopes on the edge of the Sierra Iberica, just south of Navarra where Garnacha is king, this special cuvee blends 7% Syrah with rich Grenache produced from vines of 35 to 50 years of age. The resultant wine exhibits an elegance rarely encountered in the wines from this DO. Fermentation is classical, with no carbonic maceration. Aging is wholly in stainless steel. The inky purple 2003 El Nido, which comes from 26-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines (70%) and 61-year-old Mourvedre (30%), was aged 26 months in new French and American oak barrels. It exhibits leathery, creme de cassis, and pain grille characteristics, additional tannin and body, and a formidable palate. A wine of extraordinary extract and richness, it will be a target for old timers and reactionaries who will feel it is too internationally styled, but it is an eye-opening wine from an area better known for large cooperatives and mediocre quality. It should evolve for 15 or more years. Well-known Australian winemaker, Chris Ringland, oversees the winemaking at this estate, fashioning intriguing reds with great depth as well as richness. Being fortunate enough to own some prime, south-facing parcels on the right side of the river, Carlos hired Peter Sisseck, the owner/winemaker of the famed Ribera estate Pingus to take over the winemaking in 1995. Peter has helped to turn this old estate into a Ribera powerhouse with wines that can age for years. 80% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, all aged for 20 months in French Oak before release. Deep ruby. Explosive, sexy aromas of cherry, plum, incense, freshly ground coffee and succulent herbs. A relatively new winery, Mustiguillo was created to give a place and prominence to the unheralded varietal Bobal. The owners believe strongly that this grape, when cropped low and harvested later can produce wines that can rival some of the greatest wines of Northern Spain. As such, many of the old vines of the property have been kept (some as old as 90 years old) and new vines of Bobal planted as well. The Bobal varietal is quite rigorous and very productive. Widely planted in this area, it thrives in the heat of this arid plateau. With dark, thick skins, it is quite interesting when harvested at total physiological maturity, producing wines that are very dark (sometimes appearing black) with aromas of chocolate, cocoa, and sometimes blood. Many of the old vines are unfortunately being ripped out in the area and replaced by more popular varietals such as Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Mustiguillo's mission is to protect this indigenous varietal and nurture it into what has become, according to many experts, one of Spain's most fascinating wines. 90% Bobal, 6% Tempranillo, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from very high altitude, warm vineyards where the vines are over 90 years old.
